The mission of the Abilene Library Consortium is to support libraries, museums, and other organizations across the region by delivering high-quality services to their communities through shared resources and collaboration.
The Abilene Library Consortium was formed in 1991 to unite the library resources of Abilene. But in 2006 we asked a bigger question: How can we preserve the unique history of Abilene and West Texas and make it visible online? So we launched the West Texas Digital Archives http://wtda.alc.org.
Today, after 11 years, we have preserved, digitized, and made searchable more than 80,000 newspapers, 28,000 photographs, 4,000 architectural drawings, 4,000 audio/video files, 1,400 maps, and thousands of other historic documents....with more added every day! These items reflect the history of West Texas from 1800 through the present, impacting all 50 states, 51 countries, and 17 languages. They have been used over 3 million times by people all over the world.
A hundred years from now, this is what others will know and remember about the people of West Texas. You can help preserve our past for the future…and tell the story of the resilient and determined people of our favorite place on earth!
