Connecting Caring Communities exists to build meaningful relationships that foster safe, caring, whole communities.
Our current focus is College Heights neighborhood. Here we have two Community Coordinators working and living alongside neighbors to help build a more stable community. Thay plan large and small neighborhood events including a neighborhood-wide Easter Egg Hunt and a monthly Neighborhood interest group that is generating ideas and ways in which neighbors can work together to improve their own neighborhood. Our staff has a teen leadership program in place called Young Leaders of Abilene (YLA). This group of North Abilene teens helps lead a summer camp for neighborhood children as well as monthly service projects throughout the year.
Gifts from Abilene Gives will help for support our Young Leaders of Abilene program. Our YLA teens will serve as counselors for our Caring in Actions camps in College Heights this summer. As camps counselors, they will learn about leadership, engage in team building exercises and plan activities for the camps. We will also be partnering with Goodwill Industries to offer a job readiness program for our YLA teens.
