The Junior League of Abilene is committed to enhancing the lives of children in our community. We are committed to promoting voluntarism, to developing the potential of women and to improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.
Since its beginning in 1948, the Junior League of Abilene has supported many important projects. The League provides a catalyst for community change by empowering and cultivating women to be advocates for the health and welfare of children in poverty.
The Junior League of Abilene has immediate needs for funding for our Backpacks for Kids, Bluebonnet Room, and Suds Buds programs.
The Backpacks for Kids program meets the needs of hungry children in our community who qualify as economically disadvantaged. More than 65% of students in AISD are eligible and receive free or discounted breakfast and lunch every single school day. Without these meals, which are distributed every Friday during the school year, these children would go hungry. These “Backpacks” are only $4.50 each. You can help us to reach more children who are in desperate need of this necessary meal.
The Bluebonnet Room is a resource for all CPS caseworkers to access in order to meet the physical needs of families. The League provides funding and volunteers to purchase, stock and organize the newly digitized inventory. The Bluebonnet Room is one of the first places children are taken to after being removed from their home to receive clothing and supplies.
The Suds Buds project helps Abilene children affected by poverty in the Head Start program and selected Title I campuses in Taylor County. Suds Buds provides basic hygiene items for students who otherwise couldn’t afford such items at the beginning of the school year when the need for assistance is especially great. Each year over 3,500 students and families benefit from our packages and each receive toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant soap, deodorant, shampoo, and detergent.
With your generosity, the League is able to support these projects. Additionally, the women of Junior League learn leadership skills, receive volunteer training, and develop relationships that will have long-term community impact. Thank you for your support that enables us to carry out our mission!
