On an ordinary day in April the zoo's parking lot is a see of yellow buses with a thousand kids exclaiming at the sight of Albert the alligator, oohing and ahhing over a baby giraffe, and standing in awe as the massive black rhino ambles towards them. It's just an ordinary day at the zoo, but for some of these young visitors it's their very first trip to a zoo - the first time to hear a lion roar or feed a giraffe or come nose to nose with one of the most venomous snakes in the world.
Since 1966 Abilene Zoo has been a sought after recreational and educational resource by visitors throughout the Big Country. Each year over 16,000 school children and teachers visit Abilene Zoo on an educational field trip. Field trips hale from more than 45 counties in Texas, serving school children from as close as Taylor county and as far away as Mason or Ector county. Each year 35% of all field trips are offered for free to all AISD and Wylie ISD students.
Every visit to the zoo creates an impact, instills appreciation for nature, and empowers the next generation to protect the incredible animals who share our world. Your gift to Abilene Zoo is an investment in meaningful education, creates unforgettable experiences, and makes a lasting impact on future generations.
